Attending the Concrete Foundations Association's CFACON25 in Deadwood provided valuable insights for the team at Jeff Dumas Concrete Construction. Below is what we’ll cover in this post to show how those learnings are shaping our work:

  • Our experience at CFACON25 and why industry events matter for a commercial and residential concrete contractor
  • Jeff Dumas earning the Kick-Starter Membership Award and what it means for our growth
  • Highlights from networking with industry leaders, including Western Forms
  • A glimpse into local culture with trips to Deadwood and the Crazy Horse Memorial
  • Key lessons from safety and keynote sessions that strengthen our capabilities as Utah concrete contractors

The Importance of Industry Events for a Utah Concrete Company

CFACON25 was far more than a summer getaway; it was a strategic investment for our commercial and residential concrete company in Utah. Industry events like CFACON25 are important for Utah concrete contractors who want to be leaders in this industry.

These gatherings aren’t just about seminars. They’re about making connections, discovering innovations, and absorbing insights that directly shape how we deliver concrete projects.

What truly stands out is how we translate what we learn into smarter techniques and stronger foundations. For our team, the knowledge and relationships we bring back enhance every project.

At this year’s CFACON25, we had a special reason to celebrate: our very own Jeff Dumas received the 2025 Kick-Starter Membership Award.

The CFA Board announced this honor at their annual meeting. They noted how quickly Jeff and our Utah concrete company got involved in CFA events after joining last year. We’ve been part of important gatherings, like the Foundation Contractors Night, and even hosted an executive retreat. Jeff also jumped into technical discussions and helped welcome a new supplier into the association.

Even with over 20 years in business, this award highlights how quickly we’ve become part of the CFA community.  It’s a reminder that we’re always learning and growing, and we’re excited to bring these experiences back to our commercial and residential concrete projects right here in Utah.

Networking with Top Concrete Foundation Industry Leaders

A major highlight of CFACON25 was connecting with top professionals in the concrete construction industry. For our commercial and residential concrete company in Utah, these conversations went beyond handshakes. This was the perfect opportunity to share ideas, learn new strategies, and build relationships that will shape future projects.

We had the chance to talk with the team at Western Forms, the creators of the aluminum forming system we use every day to build strong, smooth, and precise foundations. These conversations strengthen our partnership and allow us to exchange insights on what’s working in the concrete construction field.

Networking events like these are what make CFACON25 such a valuable experience for Utah concrete contractors. Whether it was at supplier meetups, small group roundtables, or casual conversations after a session, each interaction added something new to how we think about improving our commercial and residential concrete jobs back home in Utah.

While connecting with industry leaders at CFACON25, attendees enjoyed a cultural presentation held shortly after the opening event. A group of Native American dancers took the stage, sharing traditional performances that resonated deeply with everyone present. This experience enriched the event and deepened our sense of community and respect for the region’s heritage. By blending industry knowledge with cultural moments like these, the conference created lasting memories.

Exploring Deadwood and the Crazy Horse Memorial

At CFACON25, our time in Deadwood, South Dakota, went beyond conference halls. It also included unforgettable moments well worth sharing.

Jeff Dumas and his family took time away from the conference rooms to visit the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This monumental sculpture, begun in 1948, is the largest mountain carving in progress. When complete, the monument will be about 563 feet high and 641 feet long, larger than Mount Rushmore’s carved faces.

The memorial includes a cultural and educational complex featuring the Indian Museum of North America and a Native American Cultural Center. Together, they share the history and heritage of Indigenous peoples across North America. Seeing the sculpture evolve firsthand lent a deeper sense of meaning to our trip.

We also spent time in Deadwood itself. This historic town, once home to Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, is now filled with museums, re-enactments, and lively Western heritage. Strolling through its Old Town and soaking up the charm of its gold rush past added a rich backdrop to the convention experience.

Building Better Utah Foundations: Lessons for Commercial & Residential Concrete Contractors

CFACON25 offered a lineup of powerful sessions that go straight to the heart of what it means to run a successful concrete business in Utah. Here’s a look at the most impactful learning experiences we had and how they translate into real-world improvements for our operations.

The Conscious Habit

The Conscious Habit presentation on Friday morning explored how consistent behaviors shape outcomes when executing residential and commercial concrete projects. The presenter challenged attendees to adopt better routines around planning, quality checks, and crew communication. For concrete contractors, that means introducing simple, repeatable habits on site: pre-pour walkthroughs, daily debriefs, and structured checklists that boost consistency and craftsmanship. Our takeaway from this presentation was that consistent processes equal stronger results that improve every pour and inspection.

OSHA 101 for Concrete Contractors

The Osha 101 for Concrete Contractors safety session centered on current OSHA regulations, particularly fall protection for concrete work. Speakers stressed the need for proactive planning and compliance, using tools like the CFA Fall Protection Plan Development Kit. This guidance is especially relevant to Utah contractors, who need to adapt to evolving jobsite standards. By creating tailored safety protocols with clear documentation, we can minimize risks and reinforce trust with both our clients and crews.

The Profit Blueprint

Presented by Patrick Shurney, The Profit Blueprint session tackled how project metrics, cost forecasting, and strategic bidding improve profitability. The takeaway: having clear visibility into labor, materials, and overhead allows contractors to refine quotes and monitor project performance more effectively. For a Utah concrete company focused on both residential and commercial work, adopting these principles strengthens our bottom line and positions us to grow more profitably.

Safety In Action - Success!

Safety in Action - Success! was led by a safety director from Doggett Companies. This session went beyond theory, highlighting preventative systems, incident reporting protocols, and why leading indicators matter more than just lagging ones. The emphasis was on creating a safety culture, not just meeting regulations, for long-term reliability on residential foundation jobs. Applying this to our Utah team means regular training, clear accountability, and visible data tracking on every project.

Bringing CFACON25 Insights Home

In closing, our journey to CFACON25 underscores why we engage so deeply with the Concrete Foundations Association and similar industry events.

It’s not just about making connections; it’s about constantly honing our craft and bringing that enhanced expertise back home to Utah.

As we implement what we’ve learned, we’re dedicated to serving the entire state of Utah. Whether it’s in bustling cities like Salt Lake City and Park City, the wide open spaces of Alpine, Highland, Summit Park, or Emigration Canyon, or vibrant southern communities such as St. George and Cedar City, we are ready to help you with your next project. This commitment extends beyond Utah’s borders, reaching into Southern Idaho and Western Wyoming as well.

Each foundation we pour reflects the knowledge gained from these events, helping us raise the bar for every project, everywhere we work.
